En 1977, le Stary Teatr compile neuf pièces littéraires d’auteurs différents mais se situant toutes dans la Cracovie du XIXesiècle en un seul spectacle. Il s’étalera sur trois nuits. Fasciné, Wajda propose à la troupe d’en faire une série, au fond nécessairement politique. Une rareté absolue.
