The Phi Centre in Montreal to host the GIFF VR Museum!

The GIFF is proud to partner with the Phi Centre in Montreal to present its VR Museum there! As part of its 2019 PLUGS program, the GIFF VR Museum will be at the Phi Centre starting this week where the Canadian public will discover this corpus of five virtual reality (VR) films, each depicting a famous painting.

Targeting an audience of all ages, these works abolish the boundaries between digital art, cinema and painting and allow the viewer to rediscover the world’s pictorial heritage while at the same time discovering a new medium. In a fun and entertaining way, it stimulates exchanges around a unique experience – that of diving into the very core of a painting. The audience walks through the artwork, meets the painter and becomes a character himself.

Dedicated to art in all its forms, Phi is a multidisciplinary arts and culture organization that cultivates all aspects of creation, development, production and dissemination. Phi is at the intersection of art, film, music, design and technology. Through eclectic programming and a strong emphasis on content creation, Phi fosters unexpected encounters between artists and audiences.

ALTERATION

Jérôme Blanquet / 2017 / France

Alexandro is the guinea pig for an experiment led by artificial intelligence which insinuates itself even deeper into his subconscious. Inspired by Philip K. Dick, Alteration is one of the most well-crafted VR narratives of the moment won the Reflet d’Or for the Best VR Film at the 2017 GIFF.

BLOODLESS

Gina Kim / 2017 / Republic of Korea, USA
Since the 1950s, American soldiers have been stationed in South Korea. This powerfully realistic and raw VR experience looks back at the violence towards sex workers living near their camps, perpetrated with impunity by those soldiers. Immersion into the banality of evil.

CHAPITA

Eran Amir / 2016 / United Kingdom
Take a dancer. Give her a warehouse for a playfield and a few weird tools to play with. Then virtually multiply that person to the point of saturating the viewer’s field of vision. What do you get? Chapita, a technically perfect, poetic VR video clip.

DREAMS OF ’O’

Félix Lajeunesse, Paul Raphaël / 2016 / Canada

Mermaids, a water ballet, a free dive into a marine world worthy of Jules Verne’s fairyland: when the Cirque du Soleil crosses paths with Félix & Paul, the result can only be sublime.

GOMORRAH VR –
We own the streets

Enrico Rosati / 2017 / Italy

Gomorrah VR – We own the streets acts as a bridge between seasons 2 and 3 of the TV show of the same name. Enrico Rosati immerse the spectator together with the main protagonists into the heart of the Scampia, a popular neighborhood of Naples which has become the nerve center of the camorra.

HEAL TOMORROW

Romain Chassaing / 2016 / France

Romain Chassaing and the Naive New Beaters – with the complicity of Izia – once again push the limits of music videos with this deliciously irreverent 360-degree clip. Be prepared to experience the splendor and disintegration of a rock band in less than five minutes.

NOTES TO MY FATHER

Jayisha Patel / 2017 / India, USA, UK

Set in the lush rural landscapes of Southern India, Notes To My Father is a story of love, grief and reconciliation, between father and daughter. Flooded by past memories of an adolescence spent in an Indian brothel, Ramadevi pens a letter to her father, who unintentionally played a role in his daughter’s trauma.

PROXIMA

Mathieu Pradat / 2017 / France

A man whose soul would leave his body and disappear into the darkness; a terrible threat lurking; a sole beacon of light in the dark night that now surrounds us; we must follow it. A Baudelaire-like VR work, in the form of a space-time loop.

THE PROTECTORS –
Walk in the ranger’s shoes

Imraan Ismail, Kathryn Bigelow / USA / 2017

For National Geographic, moviemaker Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days, The Hurt Locker, Detroit) takes us alongside rangers in the Garamba Park in the DRC who protect elephants against heavily-armed poachers. A quintessential VR documentary.

INTERNATIONALE KURZFILMTAGE WINTERTHUR x GIFF https://www.giff.ch/2019/en/ikwxgiff/ Tue, 17 Jul 2018 10:27:08 +0000 https://www.giff.ch/2019/les-internationale-kurzfilmtage-winterthur-et-le-giff-sassocient/ Over 21 years of existence, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur has undoubtedly become the largest short film festival in Switzerland, while the 24-year-old GIFF has established itself as the most innovative audiovisual event in the country. Every year, the two festivals take place in early November.

By opening the curation of its program to Kurzfilmtage, GIFF aims to provide festivalgoers with the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of the best short film curators in Switzerland. Hence, it will be possible to discover a handpicked selection of short films from the Kurzfilmtage’s program at GIFF, between 2 and 10 November.

In parallel, Kurzfilmtage will once again call upon GIFF’s digital curators to prepare a selection of virtual reality works that will be unveiled at Winterthur’s Virtual Reality Cinema from 6 to 11 November.

“We are delighted with this national-scale partnership,” Kurzfilmtage Artistic Director John Canciani and GIFF General and Artistic Director Emmanuel Cuénod jointly declared. “This collaboration between two festivals in Switzerland who have managed to pool their programs and work closely together delights us in so much as it increases exposure for them both, while also providing an opportunity for audiences in Eastern and Western Switzerland to discover the selection of a festival that has aroused their curiosity and which they may not always be able to attend. This coming together of two festivals which both showcase innovation and unique perspectives seems like a positive sign for authors in Switzerland and beyond.”

ELASTIC TIME

Elastic Time is a mixed reality interactive documentary about space-time narrated by astronomer Tony Stark. A real-time hologram of your body is integrated into the observatory room and using the controllers, you bend space and time to your will, creating black-holes, worm-holes and time portals. Written and directed by artist Mark Boulos, Elastic Time has been created using state-of-the-art technology developed at Imverse. The volumetric 3D environment has been reconstructed from a single 2D 360° picture usingImverse LiveMaker and the real-time volumetric 3D capture of the user’s body and the volumetric recording of the actor is powered by Imverse proprietary voxel-based graphics engine.
Written & directed by Mark Boulos
Created & produced by Imverse: Robin Mange and Javier Bello Ruiz

LIMBIC CHAIR VR

The Limbic Chair VR is a safe and compact, hands-free navigation device for VR. The first of its kind to combine neuroscience-based research and ergonomic design, it connects behaviours, thoughts and emotions through touch and movement. Because moving your legs and moving your hands rely on two separate neurological systems, users are able to navigate intuitively with their legs, freeing their hands and head to view or play as usual. The Limbic Chair VR is designed to entice you to move, while sensors on the chair then transmit these movements to electronic devices to navigate through VR.
