It took filmmaker and producer Darren Aronovsky ten years to put his project together due to his desire to find the perfect actor to play the main character. He ultimately sought out Brendan Fraser, whose former fame had been replaced by obscurity, just as he had resurrected Mickey Rourke thanks to "The Wrestler". He shot on a low budget, during the confinement with Matthew Libatique, his faithful cinematographer. In this tormented huis-clos, adapted from one of Samuel D. Hunters Broadway successes, we rediscover the filmmaker's personal obsessions: addiction, creation, religion and redemption.
