Ludvig Kahlen is a captain in the Royal Danish Army. On behalf of his sovereign, he wants to establish a colony on the inhospitable moors of Jutland, something the local lord takes a dim view of.
As a man of modest extraction, Ludvig Kahlen can't claim to own any land, especially if that land is claimed by Frederik de Schinkel, the lord of the moor. But our captain has pride, courage and ambition: the king has promised to ennoble him if his colony project succeeds. With no more equipment than a Yukon prospector, Ludvig sets to work... Nikolaj Arcel's sixth feature, a cross between a western and a historical fresco, takes us back to the 18th century, to Denmark's most inhospitable lands, to meet a fascinating self-made man. After A Royal Affair in 2012, actor Mads Mikkelsen and director Nikolaj Arcel collaborate again on this adaptation of Ida Jessen's novel.
