Copenhagen, 1918. Karoline, a penniless seamstress, is expecting a child she cannot keep. She is befriended by the mysterious Dagmar. A visceral shock.
At the end of the First World War, Karoline is struggling to get by: her husband has still not returned from the front, and her job as a seamstress is not enough to support her properly. When she becomes pregnant by a careless bourgeois, she meets Dagmar, who assures her that she can help her once the child is born. In a splendid black-and-white style reminiscent of the great works of German Expressionism, Danish director Magnus von Horn creates a sticky, captivating atmosphere, a waking nightmare on the verge of horror. Victoria Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm each deliver a remarkable performance, sometimes sinister, sometimes magnetic, to enhance this formal success inspired by a sordid true story.
