The 27th Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) will take place from 5 to 14 November 2021. The Festival hosts five competitions: feature films, TV series and immersive works and seven out-of-competition and tribute sections.

Two calls for entries for GIFF’s next festival are open to European series and international digital works (see below). The short films program has been delegated to Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur since 2018. The Swiss shorts competition will be screened in Winterthur in early November and then in Geneva at GIFF.

There is no call for submission for feature films, web series and music videos, which are spotted and selected directly by the Festival’s programmers.

The following must be registered on our platform:

  • Works which have been selected by GIFF’s programming team (feature films, series, music videos, XR works, digital projects and web formats) after receiving the official selection letter from the Festival.
  • The European series submitted after the call for entries (see below).
  • The digital and immersive works submitted after the call for entries (see below).

Organized since 2019, the XR Coproduction Sessions (extended reality that includes VR, AR, MR) will be held this year on November 11 during the Geneva Digital Market (GDM). Twenty European project leaders, selected among the most innovative, will present their projects in development to European producers. A day in two parts, starting in the morning with pitching sessions, and continuing in the afternoon with special meetings between participants.  


Since 2019, ten Swiss digital creators are invited each year to present their digital projects, in the field of dance, theater, media design or visual arts to international curators. The goal of the program is to allow creators to meet with representatives of international institutions and art centers, in order to facilitate the dissemination of their projects abroad.

For more than 25 years, GIFF has paid tribute to the creative power of TV series, a major genre that has now become essential. After Berlin and Helsinki, GIFF has now been hosting the European Script Award (formerly Prix Genève) since 2020, which rewards the best script for a European TV series. Three European series, selected among the most original scripts written by upcoming screenwriters, will be screened at the Festival and considered by a Jury of experts. The best screenwriter of the year will receive a prize worth EUR 10,000 offered by the European Alliance for Television and Culture (EATC) during GIFF’s award ceremony which will take place on November 13, 2021.

The European Script Award is open to all broadcasters and production companies based in Europe.

A pioneer in the field of digital arts and innovation, GIFF has presented a program of immersive works since 2014, which has become competitive since 2016. This section showcases immersive works from around the world presented as Swiss, international or world premieres.

Creators, producers and distributors are invited to submit their digital and immersive works (in virtual, augmented and mixed reality) for GIFF’s 2021 festival. The works submitted will be considered by the Festival’s curators who will select those that will feature in the 2021 program (Nov. 5-14, 2021).

The works will be eligible for the International Immersive Works Competition and the Festival’s converging sections (out-of-competition) with a prize worth CHF 10,000 offered by the City and State of Geneva and awarded by a jury of international experts.
