The digital soul of a Taiwanese political prisoner is wandering. A jail, an apartment, a city. Virtual memories fade. After his noteworthy collaboration with Laurie Anderson, digital artist Huang Hsin-chien returns with a dreamlike, visionary work.
Bodyless is the latest VR work by Taiwanese artist and producer Huang Hsin-Chien who collaborated with multidisciplinary American artist Laurie Anderson on three virtual reality installations (Aloft, Chalkroom and To the Moon) that featured at the last Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Bodyless is based on the producer’s childhood memories during the period of martial law in Taiwan in the 1970s and evokes the barbaric measures taken by the Taiwanese military regime, colonial culture and the current digital era. The resulting visual experience is dreamlike and surrealistic.
