What does the executioner think about when he comes home in the evening? Echoing Carl Sandburg’s poem, Michelle and Uri Kranot take up this question to imagine five sketches, five outlooks on humanity. The astonishing result won the Award for Best VR Immersive Work at the last Venice Mostra.

Inspired by Carl Sandburg’s famous poem The Hangman at Home (1922), this work addresses themes of participation and responsibility through five intertwined stories. Each story features intimate, confused, curious and fragile moments that speak to us all and confront us with the complex roles of observer, witness and accomplice – what happens to the awareness of ourselves and others when no one is watching?
