Set to a frantic Eurotrance beat, director and screenwriter Kenneth Karlstad pulls us into the hellish spiral charted by his trio of teens, adapting his short film The Hunger into a hard-hitting series. Like Skins (GB) and Euphoria (US) before it, the series plunges its young protagonists into a life perpetually on the edge, and laced with drugs, sex and violence. In contrast to these defining examples of the genre, Kids in Crime is notable for its unique aesthetic. The secret: a mixture of VHS sequences, over-the-shoulder POV shots and speeded-up montages.
