Auschwitz-Birkenau. SS Commandant Rudolf Höss lives with his wife and children in a pavilion with a "heavenly" garden adjoining the camp. A journey into the depths of horror, inspired by the novel by Martin Amis. Astonishing.
"We observe it as if we are unable to identify with it, but are we really so certain of that?". Loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, described as one of the masters of the "new unpleasantness", the film was shot in Poland following extensive documentary research by the filmmaker. We find ourselves at the home of SS Commandant Rudolf Höss. The committed Nazi lives with his family in a house adjoining the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, which he runs. Largely behind closed doors, in the heart of the "zone of interest", we rub shoulders with the executioners while the horrors of the camp remain out of sight. The chilling nightmare of the Holocaust as never before depicted. A radical and essential work. The score is by Mica Levi.
