Series creation has long played a pioneering role in the conception of anti-heroines. While Cersei in Game of Thrones and Claire Underwood in House of Cards use their ruthless tricks to seduce, the eponymous protagonist of Chanshi reminds us more of Hanna Horvath in Girls: a liberated young woman, egocentric and reckless. In an autobiographical work if ever there was one, the creator, writer and actor Aleeza Chanowitz happily draws on her own life, even casting her childhood friends in supporting roles. She infuses her tale of a young woman fleeing the Jewish quarter of Brooklyn for Jerusalem with an irreverent delve into desire, whilst injecting her sex comedy with a highly unexpected political dimension. Truly formidable.
