On a Tibetan plateau at an altitude of 4000 meters, beside a majestic lake, a shepherd, a monk/photographer and several government officials argue about a snow leopard. A bittersweet comedy.
Pema Tseden was a teacher, translator, writer, filmmaker and producer. He discovered cinema in his village, watching films projected outdoors onto a sheet. As a popular and important figure in Tibetan culture, he was the first to achieve the impressive feat of releasing films made in his native language in the Republic of China. He was a leading light in the Tibetan new wave, also influencing many Chinese filmmakers. This film – his last before he died earlier this year at the age of 53 – takes us once more to the majestic plateaus where man and nature meet, and try to coexist. Filmed in the region of Maduo, the highest – at an altitude of 4300 meters – and coldest in Tibet, the breathtaking images were shot by Matthias Delvaux.
