In 2019 in Belfast, the rap group Kneecap is making headlines with its songs in Irish Gaelic, a language much frowned upon by the British authorities. Free, insolent, and invigorating.
Masters of the project, whether in front of the camera playing their own roles or as scriptwriters alongside director Rich Peppiatt, the three members of Irish rap group Kneecap evoke their tumultuous formation with panache. Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap meet a music teacher, Dj Próvai, with whom they share a passion for their local language. It didn't take long for the group to become known to the public for its modernity and to the authorities for its militancy. In a feature film of madcap musicality, the director embraces Kneecap's contagious energy and delivers a work that's as wacky as it is essential in reminding us of the importance of language as a cultural identity. A surprise guest at the concert: Michael Fassbender!
