Inspired by the tradition of the Ashough, bards of the Caucasus, The Color of Pomegranates - considered one of the finest films of the 20th century - tells the legend of the Armenian poet Sayat-Nova.
drieThe Colour of Pomegranates was a foundational film because of the way it transcends the purely cinematic – and realist – narrative driven formats. In rich and textured tableau vivants, this film of the brilliant Sergei Paradjanov converged painting, sculpture, and theatrical arts with poetry, ethnography, and of course cinema. In their work, Sarah Kenderdine and her team also adopt a multilayered approach to the (re)presentation and preservation of cultural traditions. Like the Soviet filmmaker, the New Zealand researcher also draws on the strategies of the textual and the tableau in the creation of fully interactive and emergent scenes in which the participant navigates a richly constructed sculptural world.
