In this virtuoso trip, Serebrennikov unfolds long sequence shots, live light changes, without recourse to any computer-generated images, to totally immerse the viewer in a reconstruction of his Soviet childhood. A punk opera from a filmmaker under house arrest.
Serebrennikov was the artistic director of the Gogol-Center for which he adapted Alexey Salnikov’s best-selling novel The Petrovs for the theatre. In this virtuoso trip, he unfolds long sequence shots, live lighting changes, without recourse to any computer-generated images, in order to totally immerse the spectator in a reconstruction of his Soviet childhood. Known for his unexpected casting, his choices are like “very precise sniper shots”, resulting in this punk opera from a filmmaker under house arrest.
