In 1978, Aldo Moro, President of the Italian Council, was kidnapped by the Red Brigades. Fifty-five days later he was found in the trunk of a Renault, riddled with bullets. Following on from Buongiorno, notte, Bellocchio examines this national trauma afresh.

What if Aldo Moro hadn't died in 1978? The opening scene of the series imagines that the President of the Council of Ministers survived his abduction by the Red Brigades, thereby changing the course of history. Yet his death was real. A counterpoint to his film Buongiorno Notte, this major series by Marco Bellocchio once again explores this dark period of history that sees the ruling political class forced to confront its own ineptitude. Expertly blending viewpoints, and ever in search of the man behind the historical figure, Bellocchio proves that a major filmmaker can bring every bit of his energy and vitality to the series format.
