NICOLAS Winding Refn

After Xavier Dolan, Mads Mikkelsen and Luca Guadagnino, the Geneva International Film Festival presents the Geneva Award to the Danish genius Nicolas Winding Refn. A filmmaker of contrasts, the master of the cinematic uppercut will share his visions and sorceries. An unmissable event in the presence of a true visionary and cinephile. The GIFF will also trace his oeuvre by presenting a few of his most intoxicating explorations of the sublime and the sordid, from Copenhagen to California, by way of Bangkok and medieval Scotland.

Since 2014 the Film & Beyond Award has been highlighting inspiring journeys of out-of-the-box storytellers whose visions shine across multiple artistic and audiovisual formats. For its 28th edition, the GIFF honors French actor, author, director, composer, screenwriter, producer, editor and musician Alexandre Astier. A public encounter will delve into the creative secrets of this major artist.

Tales of Swiss Innovation

OIL production

A carte blanche and a masterclass offered to a Swiss personality who has significantly contributed to the advancement of the audiovisual industry in the fields of narration, image direction, production or broadcasting.

This year, the Swiss OIL Collective of queer pornographic productions will be honored. Oil will give you a taste of where it comes from and what you can do with it.

OIL is a Swiss queer pornographic production collective. OIL offers a greedy perspective on the body. Its oil is sweet and perfumed, it makes textures fluid, can be used hot or cold, makes hair shiny and transforms friction into fusion. During this reading-performance, OIL will give you a taste of its fragrance, revealing where it comes from and what you can do with it.

Mani Haghighi – president of the jury

Mani Haghighi’s first feature film, Abadan (2003), premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Men at Work (Berlinale, 2006), won the Best Screenplay Award at the Asian Film Awards. Modest Reception (Berlinale, 2012) won the Free Spirit Award at the Warsaw Film Festival. After The Dragon is Coming! (Berlinale, 2016), Pig (Berlinale, 2018) was named one of the best films of 2019 by the New Yorker magazine. His latest release, Subtraction (Toronto, 2022), is scheduled for release.

Boris Labbé

Having studied at the École supérieure d’art de Tarbes and then at the École de cinéma d’animation d’Angoulême, his work soon spread around the world, whether at contemporary art exhibitions, international film festivals, or during audiovisual concerts. He has received some fifty international distinctions. He is currently developing a virtual reality project (Mono no aware, Sacrebleu Productions) and a video scenography with composer Lucas Fagin (Glass House, produced by Ensemble Cairn).

Laura Olin

Laura Olin, COO & Partner at ZOAN, a leading European virtual studio and the creator of Cornerstone.land metaverse and Burst Live fanverse. Laura Olin has produced some pioneering virtual work, such as virtual concerts and cultural heritage experiences. Her background is in marketing and journalism. Laura believes that technology is too important to be left to tech enthusiasts alone, and that is why she is passionate about better understanding how it might be used for creative purposes.

Luke Kemp

Luke Kemp is Acting Co-Head of Barbican Immersive (Formerly Barbican International Enterprises) at the Barbican, London. Barbican Immersive is a world leading creator of experiences that push the possibilities of digital exhibition making. Prior to working at the Barbican Luke has worked with galleries and organisations across the world to develop programming and projects including for the Venice Biennale and The Armory Art Fair amongst others.

Sabrina Calvo

Sabrina Calvo is a French multidisciplinary artist with multiple careers. As a writer, she has forged a place for herself in imaginary literature with her post-cyberpunk novel Toxoplasma, which won her the Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire. Her artistic sensibility also extends to poetry and fashion design, the latter of which she teaches at the HEAD – Geneva. Lastly, she is also involved in the creation of video games and virtual worlds.

Mélanie Courtinat

Mélanie Courtinat is an immersive artist, born and based in Paris.
She considers videogames as a major medium and explores their properties within her practice, tending to push back their limits and to draw new parallels with other creative fields.
Her work has been exhibited around the world, notably at the Venice Immersive Biennale, the Tokyo Game show and the House of Electronic Arts in Basel.

Kathrin Kohlstedde

Searching for the right formulations for the questions of our times, Kathrin Kohlstedde studied philosophy and political science where her enthusiasm for the world beyond this world was awakened: cinema. Since 1999, she has brought her love and passion for film, its contents and the audience to Filmfest Hamburg as the Head of Programme. Kathrin is a selection member of the Berlinale Co-Production Market and a member of the European Film Academy.

JURY European Script Award

Virginie Brac 

A renowned author of noir novels, her character Vera Cabral has been adapted for television. In addition to many TV movies, she created several series: Les Camarades, Les Beaux Mecs, Paris and Cannabis. She wrote season 2 and collaborated on season 4 of Engrenages, before adapting The Fall into Insoupçonnables, creating Cheyenne and Lola for OCS as well as Liaison, APPLE TV+’s first french series. She is currently writing season 2 of Black Hearts for Prime Video.

Louis Heinsman

Louis Heinsman (1952) studied Sociology and Mass Communication. He is the (co-)author of several books on media policy. After working at Rotterdam and Nijmegen Universities, he in 1981 joined Netherlands Public Broadcasting (NPO) where he was employed in several capacities, most recently as Senior Advisor International Relations. In 1987 he was one of the founders (and since 2008 President) of the European Alliance for Television and Culture (EATC).

Constance Jamet

A graduate of the Sciences-Po school of journalism, she joined the general news department of figaro.fr in 2007. Fan of X-Files, Friends and Buffy since her teenage years, avid fan of pop-culture and crowned heads, she soon put her skills and passion in the service of the culture and television department of the Figaro paper as head of section, as well as participating in the selection committee of the Luchon festival.
