Albert Serra paints a brutal picture of the islands of French Polynesia – the same ones that captivated Herman Melville, Jack London, Pierre Loti and countless others. But this movie has more in common with Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Here there are no clichés or effusions. Everyone mysteriously has a part to play. With implicit violence, a strange figure, a "High Commissioner" representing France, delights in suppressing scars and wounds. Serra remarkably sets out a monstrous political chessboard on this volcanic archipelago – colonized, evangelized and nuclearized. A skillfully told dark yet sun-drenched fictional story set in modern times. There sure is trash in paradise.
