Effective editing, scenes reminiscent of a TV report, and Kenneth Branagh's staggeringly truthful performance as an inconsistent Johnson, give this mini-series the disconcerting power of an archive. A troubling and courageous exercise, This England chooses to eschew critical distance and instead plunge unfiltered into the national and global trauma. So that perhaps, one day, it might make sense - who knows?
