Just as comfortable in documentary as in fiction, Indian director Payal Kapadia continues her exploration of feminine desire in a brilliantly subtle second feature, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes. Two roommates each have a thwarted love affair. The first is a nurse who has withdrawn since her husband left for Germany, while the second, destined for an arranged marriage, persists in her relationship with a young Muslim man. Set in a Bombay immortalized by Ranabir Das's stunning photography, Kapadia examines the place of love in Indian society, through the prism of the daily lives of two women seeking to give free rein to their inhibited feelings.
